“You know I’m not the kind of person to point fingers…”
“I know.”
“And I always believe in giving someone the benefit of the doubt…”
“I’m sure.”
“But even you have to admit this is pretty damning evidence.”
Beside her, Beckham chuckled softly and when she glared up at him, he shrugged and said, “I can’t help it. You just said damning and I thought it was funny.”
Crossing her arms and tapping her foot, she asked, “Really? Why?”
Clearly he wasn’t intimidated because he mimicked her pose as he leaned in until they were nose-to-nose. “Because over the last several days, I’ve heard you say things like, ‘Holy chestnuts’ and ‘For the love of Kris Kringle’ rather than cursing. So hearing you say damning? Yeah, it’s pretty amusing.”
Arguing with him would be pointless.
She never cursed and she knew she sounded ridiculous.
“Fine. Whatever. But what are we going to do about this situation?” she whined.
Mazie had somehow managed to get into the room with the newly-stained floors and not only walked all over the room, but then walked all around upstairs – leaving mahogany-stained paw prints everywhere.
Including the bedding in Beckham’s room.
“I’ll pay to replace the bedding,” he said, his voice going serious and a little gruff. “And I’ll see what I can do about the floors. Worst case scenario, all the floors are getting redone.”
She looked up at him with dismay. “Seriously?”
Nodding, he said, “There is a small chance that I can get the paw prints off the hallway floor and bedroom floor with some paint thinner, but I have a feeling they’re dry and set already.”
“Can we test that now?”
Nodding, Beckham turned and went down to the mudroom where Cassidy stored most of the paint supplies. Doing her best to look fierce, she stared down at Mazie. “Bad dog,” she said firmly. Only…the dog looked up at her with the biggest, saddest eyes she had ever seen and suddenly, she was the one who felt bad. Crouching down, she scratched Mazie’s ears. “I know, girl. This is what we get for letting you roam around unsupervised, right?”
The dog tilted her head and looked at her as if she understood every word and Cassidy was mildly fascinated by that.
“You know we didn’t leave you up here on purpose, right?” she went on. “We really only meant to grab a quick shower after dinner because we were messy and sweaty from all the work we did.” She paused and gave Mazie another little scratch on the ear. “It wasn’t like we planned for that to turn into some kind of soapy wonderland that led to…”
“Wild monkey sex?” Beckham said from behind her and Cassidy felt herself blush from the tip of her toes to the roots of her hair.
Glancing at him over her shoulder, she gave him a weak smile and straightened. He was so big and intimidating and yet sweet and gentle and…everything.
She had to stop herself before she let out a very dreamy sigh.
As much as Cassidy had dated plenty of very nice guys in her life, she’d never felt a connection like she did with Beckham.
